Why do I need this medicine?

Glucosamine is a natural compound that is found in our body. It is present in cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

Glucosamine is used to treat and prevent osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Glucosamine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Glucosamine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking it even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Inform your doctor if you suffer from asthma, high cholesterol or bleeding disorders.

If you have diabetes, you will need to monitor your glucose levels closely. Alert your doctor if you notice any changes in your glucose levels.

Glucosamine may not be suitable for children younger than 18 years old.

What side effects could I experience?

Glucosamine may cause nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea or constipation, difficulty sleeping, headache, rash, sensitivity to sunlight and toughening of the nails.

Alert your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

When should I not use this medicine?

Some brands of glucosamine are made from the shells of shrimp, crab, and other shellfish. People with shellfish or seafood allergy may have an allergic reaction to glucosamine products. Alert your doctor if you have an allergy to shellfish or other types of seafood.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, clopidogrel, aspirin
- diabetes medicines such as insulin
- diuretics ("water pills") such as frusemide
- painkillers of the NSAID type such as ibuprofen

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
