Why do I need this medicine?

Ispaghula husk helps to relieve constipation and maintain regularity.

Ispaghula husk belongs to a group of medicines called bulk-forming laxatives. These laxatives work by increasing the amount of water in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass.

Ispaghula husk is also used as an adjunct to a fat-lowering diet for mild to moderate hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol levels in the blood).

How do I take this medicine?

Take Ispaghula husk exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

If you have been given capsules, swallow the capsule whole with at least a full glass (8 ounces) of water or other liquid such as fruit juice. Do not chew the capsule.

If you have been given flakes, powder or granules, mix it with at least a full glass (8 ounces) of water or other liquid such as fruit juice and drink immediately.

Always take Ispaghula husk with adequate fluid. Inadequate fluid intake may cause Ispaghula husk to swell and block your throat or oesophagus (food pipe) and may cause choking.

Do not take Ispaghula husk immediately before going to bed.

You may need to take Ispaghula husk for up to 3 days to achieve full effect.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have diabetes mellitus (a type of diabetes).

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Inhaled Ispaghula husk particles may cause an allergic reaction such as runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, difficulty in breathing in people sensitive to Ispaghula husk. Thus, avoid inhalation of Ispaghula husk while mixing Ispaghula husk with water or other liquid.

Inform your doctor if you have a sudden change in bowel habits persisting for longer than 2 weeks and if use of Ispaghula husk for 1 week has no effect.

Supervise use of Ispaghula husk in the elderly and in those with narrow bowels or decreased bowel motility.

What side effects could I experience?

Alert your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing and difficulty in breathing. These could be signs of choking.

Common side effects of Ispaghula husk may include bloating or flatulence. 

Alert your doctor if you develop rash, runny or blocked nose, itchy skin or swelling. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Ispaghula husk.

What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Ispaghula husk if you have:
- difficulty in swallowing
- faecal impaction (severe constipation)
- intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel)
- colonic atony (muscle weakness of the bowel wall)
- throat problems
- abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting

Can I take this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- lithium (used to treat depression) 
- vitamins such as vitamin B12
- minerals such as calcium, iron or zinc
- insulin (used to treat diabetes)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store at 20-25ºC.

Keep away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
